Department stores offered a safe place where women could shop alone and socialize with each other outside the home. This March 2, 1895 advertisement from the Utica Morning Herald acknowledges women as being the main customers at these stores.

Department stores also offered a place for women to work during a time with limited employment opportunities for women. The job was considered both acceptable and necessary, as women were needed as salespeople once stores began carrying corsets and women's underwear. |

This photo belonged to Mrs. Lambertus, who worked as a buyer and manager of the silk department, a position of power women rarely found elsewhere.

Following its major 1941 renovation, the Boston Store opened a large cafeteria for customers and employees. This allowed shoppers to spend the whole day browsing the store without having to go elsewhere to eat.
